France applied for the hosting of the International Congress of Mathematicians in Paris in 2022.
It all started in May 2014 when the main actors of French maths institutions got together at the Institut Henri Poincaré in Paris to launch the project of application.
In June 2014, a committee for the project of application was set up. The committee currently includes: François Loeser (President), Sylvie Benzoni-Gavage, Stéphane Cordier, Maria J. Esteban, Étienne Gouin-Lamourette, Michel Ledoux, Ariane Mézard, Anne Philippe, Fabrice Planchon, Bertrand Rémy, Denis Talay.
In August 2014, a first draft of the application was presented to the General Assembly of the IMU in Gyeongju (Korea).
In November 2016, on application deadline, two applications were made public : Paris (France) and Saint Petersburg (Russia).
- In March 2017, the inspection committee of the IMU will visit the site.
- In April 2017, the executive committee of the IMU will make its recommendations.
- In July 2018, the location of ICM 2022 will be decided through a vote by the General Assembly of the IMU in São Paulo (Brazil).
France’s application is collectively supported by the whole French mathematics community. It is also supported by the political power (the Presidency of the Republic, the Ministry of National Education, Higher Education and Research, Ville de Paris, Région Ile-de-France), by great scientific institutions as well as scientific and mathematical societies (CNRS, Inria, Académie des Sciences, SFdS, SMAI, SMF), together with LabEx Bézout, Carmin (IHP-IHÉS-CIRM-CIMPA) and Amies, mathematical foundations FMJH and FSMP and MEDEF, not to mention various laboratories and institutes with whom projects and specific events have already been set up for 2022.
The chosen location is the Palais des Congrès at Porte Maillot in Paris, which seems to meet quite perfectly the requirements of such an event and presents good geographic advantages. The Congress will take place 9-17 August 2022 and the IMU General Assembly would be held in Strasbourg.
ICM 2022 in Paris would constitute a unique moment for the French mathematics community. It will be an occasion to develop new actions towards the general public and the whole society. When it gets there, initiatives and projects will be called for, so as to turn this event into a festive occasion around mathematics.
